Podcasting

PODCASTING

Podcasting

PODCASTING

The word "podcast" first emerged in 2004, to describe a rapidly developing practice of amateur radio and "audioblogging." Now, more than a decade later, podcasts are hotter than ever. Produced by media outlets, universities, comedians, groups of friends, and solo auteurs, podcasting's subgenres have exploded: from slickly produced multimedia journalism and longform audio, to travelogues, interviews, conversations, and experiments.

Podcasts can be an especially vivid medium for student work. When working with media such as music, film, sound, or the spoken word, podcasts allow students to use examples in their original form, rather than transcribing or describing them. Podcasts are also useful for journalistic assignments, opening up new possibilities for interviews and field recordings.

There are several reasons to use podcasts as a medium for creative assignments. The first, nonacademic reason applies to most forms of digital media: so that students can learn to record, edit, and publish digital audio files, developing concrete creative skills that complement the academic content at hand. A podcast or other audio recording assignment can turn an academic essay into an creative product that can be readily shared with an audience outside of the classroom, or can be useful as a portfolio item for students looking for jobs in creative or media fields. Podcasting and audio recording also has an exceptionally low barrier to entry among media formats: the prevalence of smart phones with built-in audio recording capabilities, and the availability of powerful, free editing software makes basic audio recording accessible to all students.

Skill building aside, podcasts can be an especially vivid medium for student work. When working with media such as music, film, sound, or the spoken word, podcasts allow students to use examples in their original form, rather than transcribing or describing them (see William O'Hara's sample assignment, "Audio Analysis"). Podcasts are also useful for journalistic assignments, opening up new possibilities for interviews or field recordings (see Sasha Kimel's sample assignment "Encountering the Other").

Instructors may choose to have their students follow one of many examples of stylish audio journalism or storytelling, such as "The American Life" or "99% Invisible," or ask students to develop their own style of audio presentation. Either way, working in audio allows students to combine and remix a variety of voices (literally or figuratively) in order to tell complex stories or make dynamic, vivid arguments.

Finally, podcasts open up possibilities for performance that may be otherwise unavailable in large class formats. Live performances (such as poetry recitations or dramatic monologues) or presentations may not be feasible in large lecture classes, for example, due to time constraints. Assigning a spoken-word podcast, however, allows the instructor to hear from individual students on a time-shifted basis.
